Martin currently uses ziricote only as a cosmetic fine veneer on models like the D-13E Ziricote, GPC-13E Ziricote and the SC-13E Special, but it still plays a role in tone production. While the back and sides are made from solid khaya, aka African mahogany, the attractive ziricote used on the outside also lines the inside of the guitar, where it reflects the soundwaves generated from the spruce top.
Anyone who has compared these same guitars with the similar instruments made with koa fine veneer can easily hear how the ziricote version sounds darker and fuller, much more like a rosewood guitar. While Martin has made Custom Shop guitars from solid ziricote, it is currently not obtainable in the quantities and quality required by Martin's production numbers.
