Martins made with ovangkol have good body resonance. They have more harmonic complexity than mahogany, while never sounding as dark or lush as rosewood, so the fundamental notes are strong and pronounced while still having attractive overtones.
When matched with an ovangkol soundboard, there is more definition and projection than other hardwood tops, making it sound more like spruce, yet with the roundness and mellow warmth in the bass and mids similar to a mahogany top.
